Project 2 - Nature Print Making

We'll create a beautiful nature print using cyanotype paper, a process that captures the essence of natural elements through a classic photographic technique.

First, we'll arrange leaves, flowers, or other nature-inspired objects on the pre-treated cyanotype paper. Exposing the paper to sunlight will reveal a striking contrast between the rich blue background and the white silhouettes of the objects.

After a brief rinse to wash away unexposed chemicals, the image will develop into a stunning, one-of-a-kind print, showcasing the delicate beauty of nature in vibrant blue hues.

Written Instructions

1. Prepare Your Workspace

  • Work in a dimly lit area, as the paper is sensitive to light. Avoid exposing the paper to direct sunlight until you're ready to expose your print.

2. Arrange Your Objects

  • Place your object(s) or transparency on the cyanotype paper.

  • If using flat objects, such as leaves or flowers, arrange them directly on the paper.

  • Use an acrylic sheet or glass to press the objects firmly against the paper, ensuring sharp edges in the final print.

3. Expose to Light

  • Take the paper outside and place it in direct sunlight or under a UV light source.

  • Expose the paper for approx 5 minutes depending on the intensity of the sunlight or UV light. The paper will gradually turn light blue, indicating exposure.

  • Longer exposure times will result in deeper blues, but overexposure may cause loss of detail.

4. Check the Exposure

  • Once the exposure time is complete, the image should be visible on the paper, with the unexposed areas showing a lighter blue or white (where the objects blocked the light).

5. Rinse the Print

  • Take the exposed paper indoors and rinse it under cold running water for about 5 to 10 minutes. This will wash away the unreacted chemicals and bring out the final blue color.

  • The image will continue to develop and darken as it dries.

6. Dry the Print

  • Lay the paper flat to dry in a cool, shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight during drying, as it can alter the final color.

  • Once fully dry, your cyanotype print will have a deep blue background with white or light blue silhouettes of your objects.

  • Trim it slightly and use the frame provided to frame it and place it somewhere you’ll love seeing it :)
